Communities and Individuals Recognized for Outstanding Performance and Professionalism in Economic Development – Award Ceremony Held at Annual Guild Conference in New Orleans

5 MARCH, 2013 (Chicago, IL) – Site Selectors Guild President Jerry Szatan and Awards Committee Chair Don Schjeldahl unveiled this year’s recipients of the Excellence in Economic Development Awards during a ceremony at the Guild’s second annual conference in New Orleans on Tuesday night, February 26th.

The 2013 Guild Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognized organizational achievement in the following segments:

  • Small Town: Ashland (KY) Alliance, represented by Bob Hammond
  • State: Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development, represented by Catherine Smith and Robert Rigney
  • Utility: Georgia Power, represented by Brenda Robbins
  • Special Jurisdiction: The Northspan Group, Inc., represented by Chris Maddy

Jerry Szatan presented The President’s Award, for outstanding individual accomplishment to Gary Tonjes, the President of Albuquerque Economic Development.

An appreciative Szatan remarked, “Our partnerships with economic developers are critical to the success of our projects.  These agencies and individuals demonstrated excellence in the economic development process and were tremendous partners.”  Schjeldahl echoed these remarks, “This is our opportunity to formally recognize economic development professionals who have gone above and beyond in serving their communities.”

The mission of The Site Selectors Guild is to advance the profession of international corporate site selection by promoting the site selection profession and providing education, networking and other services to those involved in the site selection industry.  The award program supports this mission by:

1. Promoting positive interaction between the site selector profession and economic development organizations (EDOs) for the purpose of exchanging ideas
2. Encouraging innovation by highlighting what site selectors recognize as EDO best practices
3. Introducing and advancing high standards for the site selector profession

Guild members nominate EDOs with whom they have worked on a corporate location project within the previous three years.  Nominees are individuals or organizations that, during the course of a site location project, made a significant difference in the lives of the people involved and the community as a whole.  A committee appointed by the Site Selectors Guild executive board reviews nominations and picks recipients.

Szatan added, “Recipients of a Guild award are not required to have won the project for which the community was evaluated.  The Guild believes that when the actions of an individual or organization create in the mind of the site selector a lasting respect for the community, recognition is warranted.”

Principles honored by the award include:

  • Ingenuity and creativity
  • Mastery of process
  • Going above and beyond
  • Political acumen
  • Personal, caring touch

In the course of a year, Guild members collectively work with hundreds of EDOs who represent both domestic and international jurisdictions. EDO recognition is high praise from professionals who are trained to evaluate location alternatives and recommend to a corporate client the best option.
